CAC@SJB Advisory Team Members

We'd like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the team of wonderful individuals who have been assisting us at CAC@SJB behind the scenes. Each of these individuals have two things in common; they care deeply about their community, and their contributions at the Center over the past 6 years have been invaluable to the growth of the Center. They have been generous with volunteering their time, and have been extremely supportive of the Center's existence at St. John's parish, here in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where we all feel the Center fills a great need in this under-served and overlooked part of the community; providing an open, safe, and nurturing environment for all youth and adult residents of this community, and the communities outside of St. John the Baptist parish, where we all can gather and celebrate the impactive gifts of art, our cultures, and community activism.. FREE OF CHARGE!

This dynamic team includes long-time members of St. John's parish, and a special group of individuals from the greater community, some of whom have been dedicated to assisting the vision and mission of the Center from the very beginning in 2002.. and help keep the Center alive today.

The CAC@SJB Advisory Team Members are..

Mr. Richie Robles
Musician, SJB Parish Representative

Richie Robles is a long-time member of St. John the Baptist Parish and resident of Bushwick, Brooklyn. A gifted musician, Richie has dedicated most of his life in serving his community at St. John's as an active parishioner for over 15 years. He is a founding member of CAC@SJB since it's early conception and has performed at the Center many a time since 2002. He has also offered guitar lessons for beginners and has even stood in as an assistant curator during many of the Center's past art exhibitions. Richie's love and support of art in all forms is a clear indication of his belief in the art of expression that educates and brings people together. His multitude of gifts and amazing talent, along with his fighting spirit and will for us to continue by any means necessary, have been such an important source of inspiration for all of us at the Center. His commitment to his community at St. John's is unquestionable.. and his presence at the Center is simply invaluable.

Mr. Howard Folk
SJB Parish Representative

Howard Folk and his family have been long-time members of St. John the Baptist parish community. Howard can always be counted on for support and assistance whenever the need arises. His love for his parish, his community, and concern for the youth have led him to become part of the Center's very core. His belief of the need for community spaces for youth and adults, like we have at the Center, have geared him to become one of our mentors and greatest examples of faith that we have come across at the Center since day one. He  is always present and assists with all of the Center's activities and events, and has been an Advisory Team member since 2004. His volunteer efforts and continued support of the Center and our mission have been vital.. but it's his commitment, his humor, and his presence behind the scenes that is the greatest source of inspiration for us all.

Mr. Luis Bernard / The In Progress Group

Mr. Luis Bernard, known as "Mr. B", is the Co-founder and President of The In Progress Group; a non-profit organization dedicated to utilizing poetry and writing workshops for the empowerment of today's greatest resource and tomorrow's future leaders, the teens and young adults of our inner city communities. He is a resident of Queens, NY .. and has been a staple of the NYC poetry scene for many years. Luis is an amazing and powerful spoken word poet who has performed at many of the top slam poetry venues around New York City, including the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and hosts highly successful poetry events in Mount Vernon, NY. He has been an Advisory Team member since 2006, has facillitated a number of wonderful poetry workshops for teens and adults at the Center, and hosted a number of our special poetry events since 2006 as well. His leadership, dedication to youth, and firm belief for the need of more active community spaces in our neighborhoods have led him to become one of our greatest motivational speakers and examples of dedication at the Center. It's great having him on our team, but even more special having him as a member of our Center family.

Mr. Malik Canty
Educator, Writer, Poet

The Word Bird.. Malik Canty has been a special part of the CAC@SJB family since 2002. His many appearances at our special events, where he performed his straight forward, unique style and offered powerful messages through his amazing gift of poetry, have been nothing but awe-inspiring. An author of 2 poetry books, an educator at Eastern District High School for Legal Studies, and mentor to many gifted young poets who attend his poetry workshops in Brooklyn, have made Malik a positive force in our community and at the Center. His soul-stirring and thought-provoking poetry, along with his deep voice, have made a lasting impact and added great substance to our efforts at the Center since he joined us. It's been a pleasure having Malik as one of our team members. His sharing of ideas and keen insight have been such a source of knowledge and inspiration for all of us at the Center, and we are blessed to still have this great warrior with us. We are forever grateful for Malik's undying support and commitment to the Center's mission.

Ms. Jeorlaine Hill
Community Outreach, Promoter and Writer
SJB Parish Representative

Jeorlaine is a long-time resident and parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. She's a dynamic young woman with a deep passion for her community and a strong desire to help make a positive impact in young people's lives.  We are happy and most proud to have her come back home to bring a special added element to the Center that could only come from a young adult who grew up right at St. John's parish, and is looking to give something back to the community she cares so deeply about.

In her own words:
I've been a member of St. John the Baptist since I was 3 years old.  At a young age, I followed my mother's example of stewardship in the church and the community, and was called into ministry early on.  In 1992, when Pope John Paul II gave the ordinance, I became the first female Altar server at SJB.  Prior to becoming an altar server, I was the youngest lector at SJB as well.  Under the leadership of Ms. Elaine Catherine Hopkins (R.I.P.), I served as a member of the now defunct Black Ministry Committee.  Under Ms. Hopkins' guidance, we were a strong voice in the parish community; carrying out and implementing various cultural activities, Kwanzaa celebrations, revivals, and traditional African ceremonies where we would remember our ancestors.  While serving on the Black Ministry committee, as a teenager, I joined the youth group "C.L.U.B." (Christ Loves You Baby!) at SJB that was led by our beloved Br. Joseph Tauraso, CM (R.I.P.).  I can't begin to expound on the many different volunteer activities that we carried out in our community and outside communities that we never dreamed needed our help.  I share all this to say St. John's was very much a major part of my life as a child and teenager.  I grew up in St. John the Baptist Church and in this community.. and now, as an adult, I've been called to be a part of a different ministry.  I plan to give my all to the Center for the Arts & Culture @SJB, and to the community of Bedford-Stuyvesant.  I look forward to seeing you there at our future activities and events.  Stay safe and stay blessed.

Msgr. John Powis, Special Counsel

Msgr. John Powis is a long-time advocate for the needs of the poor and a legendary community activist in Brooklyn, NY; a lifetime ministry of community service that has earned him the moniker "Bushwick's Bulldog".  The former pastor of St. Barbara's Church in Bushwick, Brooklyn, he is still active at the parish through his dedicated work as the Director of Bushwick Housing Independence Project; a non-profit organization that addresses the housing crisis that is plaguing our community and helps struggling families that are being threatened with eviction to maintain their homes.  Although he holds no formal position with us at CAC@SJB, he has been a great source of inspiration for us and so many others in the community, and has assisted us at the Center with his great knowledge of community activism and healthy leadership.  He has been generous in providing us with his special counsel and has given us great support for what he believes the Center is truly offering to the community youth and adults of Bedford-Stuyvesant and Bushwick.. a safe haven, a beautiful space to create, and many different forms of art to experience and enjoy.  We are so grateful to Fr. Powis for his great support, his spirit of love, his inspiring example, and his faith.

We greatly appreciate each one of these dedicated and caring community individuals for all their support, the gift of their time, talents, input, and their presence behind the scenes. We at the Center for the Arts & Culture @ SJB are extremely fortunate and very proud to have each one of these wonderful individuals as colleagues, but most of all, as part of our family. May God bless you all.

This special list of individuals is growing.  Why don't you join us?

CAC@SJB Presentation on YouTube!

We want to invite all of you to check out the cool presentation on YouTube that was produced by one of our talented teens, Ian, who has blessed us at the Center not only with presence.. but with his amazing Krump dancing, his creativity, his openness, and his heart. The presentation is made of small clips from the wonderful Open-mic Poetry event Celebrating Black History with Love that was held at the Center for the Arts & Culture @SJB back in February 2007. It was an unforgettable afternoon full or poetry, art, music, and dancing at the Center that was attended by over 50 teens and adults.

We thank Ian for taking the time to put this piece together.. and for doing such a cool job! You can joy the presentation by clicking on the link below.

Rest With the Lord: "Angel" Brenden - The Inspirational Power of a Child's Spirit

"And a child shall lead them.."

Hello, everyone..

I just wanted to share the story of an amazing, courageous, and inspirational young boy, Brenden Foster, with you today.  His courage and concern for others while suffering from Leukemia totally touched my heart, and it will definitely touch your heart.. and inspire you. A warning in advance.. you just may shed a few tears as I have everytime I watch this 11 year old boy's example of faith and compassion for others in the face of death.  There is no doubt Brenden was an angel placed on this earth to inspire and encourage us all.. to never give up, live life to the fullest, and to make a difference in others lives while we are here on this earth.

Brenden returned to the Lord on Friday, Nov. 21.. and his courageous life example presses these questions to all of us..

What will my legacy be?
How can I make a positive impact in other's lives during my time on earth?

Whatever it is.. like Brenden said.. "don't ever give up".

These are the links on the brief but impactive life of an angel for our times.. and the dying wish of Brenden Foster.. to feed the homeless.  May you all have an absolutely blessed and peaceful Thanksgiving with your families, friends, and loved ones.. and may the Lord forever bless Angel Brenden and his family.. and keep them all well at this special time of year.

Review of CAC@SJB's "Moment of Noize" Gathering: An Afternoon Full of Blessings

Glenn Angel Echevarria, Gregory Mills (Chairman of the International Agency For Minority Artist Affairs in Harlem, N.Y.), and Luis Bernard share a moment at the Center's Moment of Noize Community gathering on Sat. Nov. 8th

CAC@SJB held it's first MOMENT OF NOIZE community gathering on Saturday, Nov. 8th, and what resulted was an unforgettable afternoon, full of art, music, poetry.. and a few unexpected surprises that stirred the spirit of each individual who was in attendance.  It was a cold, damp, and rainy day.. but that couldn't keep the sun from shining brightly inside of the Center this afternoon.

Luis Bernard introduces a moved Greg Mills
after reciting a powerful and personal poem

The Center for the Arts & Culture @SJB hosted the first in what we are looking to be a series of gatherings of the dynamic artisans, activists, and organizers of our inner-city communities.  The purpose for this will be to open the doors of the Center at St. John's to all community residents who want to be a part of something special while making a difference in our communities that are so under-served, under-utilized, and simply bypassed.

Glenn Angel acknowledges Greg Mills, recites words from
Nelson Mandela's Inaugural speech, and sings in honor of
new President-elect, Barack Obama

From beginning to end, the afternoon was full of wonderful revelations of spirit, courage, and yes.. a whole lot of talent!  Guests spoke, shared their thoughts, their hopes, sang songs, read their poetry, and just let it loose.  There were a few surprises and unexpected guests that added even more to the whole experience. One of those special guests was Mr. Gregory Mills (Chairman of the International Agency for Minority Artist Affairs and Art Gallery Curator at the Adam Clayton Powell State Building in Harlem), who came all the way down from Harlem U.S.A. to present the Center with a special gift of blessings.  It was truly a memorable moment for all of us, and we were greatly honored to have him come and bless us the way that he did.  We greatly thank you, Mr. Mills!

We are going to host a number of these Moment of Noize community gatherings at the Center in the new year, and all community residents looking for a place to make a difference and share their gifts are very welcome to join us at these special gatherings.  In the meantime, the Center will be hosting our Annual Holiday Jam 2008 on Saturday, Dec. 13th from 12 noon - 5 pm.  We are in the midst of planning all the festivities for this special event that will be a whole guest filled afternoon of poetry performances, music, and a brand new group art exhibition featuring some wonderful paintings and artwork that will definitely inspire your mind and feed your soul.  If you already know us, we wouldn't have it any other way!

Keep posted for updates and the official invitation for this special Holiday Jam 2008 event on this blog in the coming week.  It's going to be very special, and an event not to be missed.  Hope to see you all there.. and may you all stay safe, be blessed, and have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

RIP: "Mama Africa" Miriam Makeba

Nov. 9:  Legendary South African singer and anti-apartheid activist Miriam Makeba has died of a heart attack in Italy at the age of 76, her representatives said.  Makeba, who was known as "Mama Africa" and the Empress of African Song, died shortly after performing at an anti-racism and anti-Mafia concert in Castel Volturno Sunday night.  Makeba's aides said the performer agreed to sing at the musical event despite her recent poor health. An Italian news outlet said she sang for about 30 minutes but suffered chest pains and was taken to the hospital where she died.

We at CAC@SJB want to share our sympathy with her family, all of Africa, and all of those around the world who recognize Mama Africa as a modern day heroine for the people of Africa, and an example of faith, courage, and perseverance through her uplifting voice and gift of music.  We pray for and honor Mama Africa.. and are thankful to God for her, her amazing accomplishments, and especially for all the youth she was so dedicated to, and supported throughout the latter years of her life.  May she find herself now at peace in her rightful place.. in the Eternal Loving Arms of God.

It Happend.. Barack Obama Makes History!!

Our new First Family - Obama with his wife, Michelle, and their beautiful daughters

All of us involved at the Center for the Arts & Culture @ St. John the Baptist here in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn share in the joy and great, historic event of the election of Senator Barack Obama as our 44th President of these United States of America, making him the first African-American to win the presidency.. and by a landslide!

It's official.. Barack Obama wins!

Barack Obama, the son of a father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, was elected the nation's 44th president Tuesday, breaking the ultimate racial barrier to become the first African American to claim the country's highest office.  A nation founded by slave owners and seared by civil war and generations of racial strife, delivered a smashing electoral college and popular vote victory to the 47-year-old first-term senator from Illinois, who forged a broad, multiracial, multiethnic coalition. His victory was a leap in the march toward equality: when Obama was born, people with his skin color could not even vote in parts of America, and many were killed for trying.

Party time in Chicago as the announcement is made.. Obama wins!

"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer," Obama told more than 240,000 celebrants gathered along Chicago's waterfront. Many had tears streaking their faces.

O, happy day..

Overcome by emotion, the Rev. Jesse Jackson  shed some old tears and new ones as President-elect Obama addressed the crowd and the nation after his historic win

“Young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans have sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of red states and blue states,” he said. “We have been and always will be the United States of America.

“It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America,” he said to a long roar.  After 8 long destructive, devisive, and nightmarish years of the Bush regime, we are with you Mr. President-elect.. along with our hopes and dreams of a better and brighter tomorrow.. and a future that finally brings us all together.

We pray that change is real, positive, and leads to some healing this time around.

The ball is in your hands now, Mr. President

God be with the new president.. and may the Lord bless us all.

Congratulations, Barack!
