"Break the chains.." original painting by Glenn Angel
Now showing at the Center
This February, CAC@SJB is honoring Black History (Our History!) with some special offerings for our whole community to enjoy. The first offering is a special viewing of art by some of the Center's own artist family. Artworks by Chantal Smith (Queens), Iandry Randriamandroso (Madagascar, Africa), Glenn Angel (CAC@SJB), and others will be on display as a group showing in honor of our community's Black Heritage as we celebrate Black History.
This Week at the Center:

Saturday, Feb. 25 from 2 - 5 pm - Lyrical Sanctuary & Open-mic Poetry in Honor of Black History and Heritage (with art exhibiton open to the public)

Another special offering we're extending to our community this month is plenty of Poetry! Not only will we be hosting a special open-mic poetry event, but we will be welcoming the return of the Lyrical Sanctuary! The CAC@SJB Lyrical Sanctuary is a wonderful product of the highly successful Creative Writing Workshop for Teens and Adults given by Luis Bernard (The In Progress Group) in Nov. 2005.
The Lyrical Sanctuary in session
The Lyrical Sanctuary has evolved to become a unique experience where aspiring poets, musicians, and artists have the opportunity to gather twice a month at the Center to share their poetry, artistic ideas, and even their lives with one another as a way to support one another's dreams and their hopes, as they learn to utilize their special gifts. These highly impactive evenings will lead to the second Creative Writing Workshop coming in early Spring. Until then, the Lyrical Sanctuary gatherings will continue and we will be hosting a number of open-mic poetry events for the teens and adults of our community.

So, come join in the fun at the Center this February and beyond as we honor our heritage and our history. All the art, poetry, and music is going to be great! There will also be a special series of photos from the NYC Parks Mural Project titled "FREEDOM".. directed and designed by NYC Parks Community Coordinator (CAC@SJB's Director) Glenn Angel Echevarria, and completed last year by a very talented group of community teens at Roy Wilkins Recreation Center in Queens, NY.
