The very first "Poetry 4 Peace" event was held back in early 2003, inspired by the beginning of the Iraq War, and the now infamous "War on Terror". That afternoon event was filled with poetry that resonated with a powerful range of emotions from an amazing group of poets, and community residents that collectively shared their hearts with one another.. as we all cried out for an end to the madness that was about to take place. Well, here we are a couple of years later, and the war continues as the body count rises, so many innocent lives lost, while others are maimed for life in more ways than one. But this is not solely about war. There is so much pain and suffering in our community, our society, our country, and our world.
The recent events and catostrophes we've witnessed with devastating hurricanes like Katrina, the earthquakes, and tsunamis have taken their toll, and has shaken the earth to its core. We felt that at this special time of year, the Christmas Season, the return of "Poetry 4 Peace" would be a great way to unite our hearts, and share our feelings, our hopes, and our gifts through the power of poetry, and spoken word for a common cause.. the celebration of LIFE! We have so much to be thankful for, although we're often guilty of taking our lives, and our many blessings for granted. But on Saturday, Dec. 17th, we are not taking anything for granted, we are sharing our gifts, showing mad love, and celebrating all that we have.. for the sake of PEACE!
We are inviting all of the members of the recent Creative Writing Workshops that just wrapped up this November, to come and share their new poems, and take the mic hostage! We are also inviting our community residents, and our gifted, community poets to join us, and inspire us with words that feed the mind, body, and soul. It doesn't matter where you're from, what you believe, or what language you speak. The CAC@SJB family here in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn welcomes you! The first "Poetry 4 Peace" was a memorable and amazing experience, this second coming promises to be just as powerful, if not more.
Although this special event is free to the public, we are encouraging all our guests to make a contribution at the door to help CAC@SJB, and for us to continue our ongoing mission of providing a unique, and true community venue where everyone can see some great art from community artists on the verge, enjoy educational arts workshops, youth and adult activities, and events such as this one. Not many places in our community are offering these things, so any contribution you can make would be greatly appreciated. We at CAC@SJB, are driven to continue making things happen here for this community, and for all our guests who take the time to travel here and attend any of our events. We encourage you to continue supporting the Center's efforts.. because with your imput and generous contributions, things cannot only happen here.. they will happen!!
For more info about this event, if you'd like to assist, or want to know more about the Center for the Arts & Culture @ St. John the Baptist, please call the Center, and leave a message for Glenn Angel at (718) 455-6864 ext. 152, or contact Luis Bernard at (347)623-2547.
